Five Ways to Save Cash This Winter

There are a few people out there who enjoy the winter season, but for the most part, winter is a fairly unpopular season of the year. The snow and ice are beautiful to look at, but they are a bear to travel in. Winter is packed full of major holidays, which can be a very exciting time, but they are also difficult on the budget. The colder weather also makes staying indoors more often necessary, which creates increased expenses inside the home. There are some factors that you simply can't control when it comes to the winter expenses, but I believe there are a few ways to save some cash this winter season.

Five Ways to Save Cash This Winter

5. Car Pool or Ride Public Transportation- If there is public transportation near where you live, this may be a good option, especially in the winter. Winter driving is tough on your vehicle, and public transportation is usually fairly reliable. Another solid option is finding a couple of co-workers to start a car pool. You'll all save money in the long run.

4. Seal the Windows and Doors- It may cost a little bit of money at the start to seal up the windows and doors, but that small investment will be well worth it in the long run. High quality weatherstripping is a must to keep the cold air out of your home. Your energy costs will be reduced greatly if your doors and windows are sealed tightly.

3. Use the Sunlight- Just because it is winter doesn't mean the sunlight won't help warm your home during the daytime. Many people keep the blinds closed in the winter, but this makes the home more difficult to heat. Move any furniture that may be blocking the sun from coming in as well.

2. Save on Gifts- Shopping for gifts during the holiday season can be a big expense, but you can certainly save if you shop wisely. Take advantage of all discounts offered at your local store, and always look for coupons or promotional codes. Don't procrastinate when it comes to Christmas shopping or any holiday shopping, because you'll end up with an inferior product and you'll pay more for it.

1. Turn the Thermostat Down- Many people leave the heat on at 70 degrees or higher all day long, which can get quite costly. I strongly suggest turning the heat down, especially at night. Add some extra blankets to your bed and turn the heat down to 64 or 65 degrees when you go to bed. Consider wearing sweaters and heavy clothes instead of keeping the thermostat so warm during the day as well. You'll be surprised how much you can save by lowering the thermostat just a few degrees.

I've turned the thermostat down, but haven't considered sealing my windows. Will look into doing that, thanks.
