Five Ways to Stay Alert on Road Trips

Kaitlinn Dickinson
With budget's becoming ever tighter many are choosing to travel by car when planning a vacation. It is a great cost-effective way to travel, but it can become dangerous for the unprepared. If you are planning a road trip check out these five ways for you to stay alert while driving and safe on the road!

1. Prepare yourself. Make sure to be well rested before you start your drive. Be sure to get a full night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast and wear clothing that will not constrict you or make you uncomfortable in the car. Make sure that anything you will need while driving is easily accessible. This simple step will help keep your mind focused and alert while driving.

2. Entertainment! Collect some of your favorite cd's and bring them along for the ride. Not only will you have a blast singing along with your car mates; the beat will keep you alert and wide awake! Have you been dying to read that latest bestseller? Try looking for it on tape. Listening to a recording will help keep you alert; you will be listening for the latest plot twist! This step can be made even more effective by turning the volume up louder than what you might normally listen to.

3. Take Breaks. Make sure you know where the rest stops will be on your journey. Taking regular breaks to stretch your legs will go a long way to reenergizing you for the rest of your road trip. It is also a great opportunity to use the restroom and have a meal if you are hungry.

4. Pack Snacks. It is important to stay away from heavy meals that will make you bloated and tired while driving. Try packing some nuts, fruit, cheese sticks and carrot sticks in a small cooler in the car. It may also be helpful to bring a thermos of hot coffee, water bottles and your favorite caffeinated soft drink. These snacks will go a long way in helping you to make a safe road trip!

5. Monitor Car Temperature. Make sure that you do not keep your car to warm or comfortable. You should alternate between rolling your car windows down and blasting the air conditioning for an extra boost of energy. Try aiming the air condition vent towards your face to help keep you extra alert.

Using these five tips may make the difference between having a safe road trip or a disaster. Always remember to be safe and alert while driving!
