Five Ways to Stay Positive After Losing Your Job
Open a Whole New World of Opportunities for Yourself
Clean out the clutter and earn some extra cash - You've been saying for years that you need to clean out your closets, garage or the entire house. Well, now is a great time to do it. Clean out your closets and take the clothes and household items that are still in good condition to a local consignment shop to earn a little extra cash. Some items, like antiques, collectables and toys can be sold on e-Bay to get the best price. Clean out your garage and have a garage sale to get rid of all the old bikes, skates, outdoor toys or whatever else has been lying around there cluttering it up. Not only will it make you feel good having an uncluttered garage and living space but you can also make a few dollars too.
Rediscover an old hobby - When we work it is easy to give up old hobbies due to lack of time, so now is a great time to take them up again. Did you used to play the guitar? What about crafts, sewing or the painting you used to enjoy doing? Do you love to write poetry but never had time to think about it anymore? Or maybe you enjoyed working on cars? Whatever you once enjoyed doing in your spare time may be just the thing to keep you busy now that you are not working. Some hobbies can even turn into something more, like selling the crafts you make or working on friends' cars for money. Whether you do it for fun or as a new way to earn extra income, doing something you love is a great way to spend your time.
Learn a new skill - Now is a good time to update your job skills or learn a new one. Many state unemployment centers offer information on free classes and seminars available to those who are currently unemployed. Take advantage of these programs and update or upgrade your skills. The more qualified you are, the easier it will be for you to find a new job.
Volunteer - Volunteering in your community is not only a great way to spend your time but is also very rewarding. There are so many organizations that are always in need of volunteers so it should be easy to find the right fit for you. If you love animals, try your local humane society. You might enjoy volunteering at your local hospital, your child's school or even your community library. Your church may also have many volunteer opportunities for you to look into. Not only is volunteering good for your soul but it is a wonderful way to meet people and network. Any new skills you learn from your volunteer job will also look good on your resume. All around it is a great way to spend your time while you are not working.
Spend time with family and friends - Now that you have the time you can spend more time with your family and friends. You don't have to spend money to have a good time together. Get together with friends for a movie night at home. Go for walks with your family, play in the park or go biking. Reconnect with friends or relatives you haven't seen for a long time and spend some quality time together. This is a great time to make memories that you can reminisce about long after you've found a new job.
Losing your job is a life-altering experience but it doesn't have to be the worst period of your life. By staying busy and becoming involved with your friends, family and community you can turn this into a positive experience and may even find a new direction in your life that may lead to a wonderful new career.
