1. Read to them. Children may not understand what being green truly means when you try to explain it to them using your adult terms. Finding children's books that approach the subject in a fun way will help to get the message across to children in a way that they understand. Today's bookstores carry a wide variety of children's books that promote a green lifestyle and also explain the reasons why it is important. Children need to understand why it is necessary to live a green lifestyle if you truly want them to take what you teach them to heart.
2. Plant a garden. Giving children a hands-on approach to being green can make a huge difference. While planting a garden can teach children responsibility and the benefits of hard work, it can also help to explain to them about the benefits of home grown foods. You can also use the opportunity to teach the kids about organic and natural ways to manage the garden so that they don't opt for the chemicals when they are older. When the time comes for harvesting, the kids should be allowed to pick the fruits of their labor. Children will truly enjoy this activity and not realize that you are making an effort to teach them to be green.
3. Take them to the grocery store. Sharing your purchase choices with your children is especially important for those kids that are a little older and can really make a huge change in their way of thinking. Teaching children how to make green choices starts with reading labels and telling them what to avoid. You can create a game by having the children search for the words "organic" and "natural" while looking through the aisles. Equally important are the choices made in the produce section and this should also be discussed with the children. Bringing your own grocery bags is a must and an imperative part of teaching children how to be green.
4. Compost. Creating a compost bin in your yard is an easy way to provide nutrients to your vegetable garden and also reduce the amount of waste your household creates. Children will learn an essential green activity that can become a standard for them as they age. Composting can be contained in professional composting bins or sped up by adding a special variety of worm available for purchase online. Children will really enjoy seeing what happens to the waste as it decays and they will also appreciate the time spent together. The compost can then be used to fuel plants all around your home, furthering the green experience for the children.
5. Recycle. One of the easiest ways to teach children to be green is to recycle. Having the kids help you sort through mail and other papers is an engaging experience that also helps to show them how to be more conscious of what they throw in the trashcan. Organizing bins according to what your community recycles is a great way to have children sort and process the materials which they will also enjoy. You can even see about visiting your local recycling facility for a truly lasting impression that will be sure to create green children for years to come.

Post a CommentExcellent advice here! I really hope more parents do these things. Thank you for writing this piece.
I guess it's easy to sum up by saying "teach by example!" I wish I could get my wife to cooperate with being more green and then our kids would follow. I sure try and I do my part, but it's difficult when only parent takes this seriously!
