When it comes to homeschooling your children it can certainly be a challenge to make sure that they are learning everything that they should. In some cases parents may feel as if they are spending too much time on one particular subject. One of the benefits of homeschooling however is that you have the ability to go as fast or as slow as you would like. Below you will find five things to look for in order to ensure that your child is mastering their current subject.
Test scores
One of the most popular methods that homeschooling parents use to make sure that their children are mastering a particular subject are their test scores. How well they do, or do not do on the test can often tell you if they are mastering a particular subject, or if they are not. If your child does not do well on certain areas of the test you can review those areas and retest them.
Give an explanation
Another way that you can tell if a child is mastering a subject is if they have the ability to explain it to you. Some parents like to have their children demonstrate what they just learned. For example if you are covering a new area in math, why not have your child demonstrate that they understand it by teaching you how to perform a particular operation. If they are able to do this it will clearly show that they understand.
Real life application
Another way that you can tell how much your child is learning is if they are able to make real life application. Most of what we teach our children and what is built into their curriculum is information that will help them in their day to day lives. This is a great way to see if a child is really learning anything.
Time spent on extra practice work
Extra practice worksheets which is often given by public schools as homework is another way to tell how well your child is mastering a particular subject. Some may refer to this as busy work, but in my experience with homeschooling, I have found it to be a great way to really put their skills to the test.
Progress quickly
With some subjects if your child is moving quickly through the lesson this may mean that it is an easy lesson for them to follow. In this case let your children guide the pace of the lesson. This will help you to see if you are grasping the lesson or not.
