Five New Year's Eve Movies to Watch

Sometimes watching a movie that has a poignant New Year's Eve scene is a simple pleasure to ease into the new year and new beginnings. It sure beats starting off the new year being known as the guy who was caught during the party locked in the closet making out with the unwilling coat rack.

"When Harry Met Sally"

While the finale of the film takes place at a New Year's Eve party and contradicts the idea of staying home for New Year's Eve and watching a movie, the moving scene where Harry confesses his love for Sally-there is no need for a spoiler warning for a 20 year old movie-is a wonderful romantic scene best shared with a loved one watching alongside you.

"The Hudsucker Proxy"

It is a Coen Brothers' screwball comedy about the invention of the hula hoop with the final act taking place during New Year's Eve. The film should already have your attention at "Coen Brothers' screwball comedy."

"The Godfather Part II"

Francis Ford Coppola's sequel to his magnum opus "The Godfather" does a rare feat as a sequel that is better than its predecessor. Continuing the exploits of the Corleone family while providing its origins, "The Godfather Part II" has a particularly noteworthy New Year's Eve scene taking place in Cuba as Corleone patriarch Michael makes a particularly disturbing discovery about his brother Fredo. As the new year rings and Fidel Castro takes over the country, the two share a special fraternal kiss before the movie sends Michael Corleon spiraling into his seemingly hopeless situation.

"Four Rooms"

Four short films loosely tied together by being set in a hotel celebrating New Year's Eve, "Four Rooms" is a roller coaster ride that reminds you to sympathize with the workers who have to work on New Years Eve. Ted the bellhop finds himself seduced by witches, participates in a bizarre hostage situation, babysits some bratty kids, and becomes part of a really risky dare. It kind of makes you happy that you can stay home watching movies instead of working on New Year's Eve.

"The Poseidon Adventure"

No matter how badly the year was for you, you can take solace knowing at least you will not spend the first day of the new year on a capsized ship as part of a ragtag group of passengers struggling to survive and escape death. As you watch the number of deaths during the actual capsizing and the rest of the survivors get picked off one by one, maybe you will be thankful that you are alive and on solid ground for another night and are watching the original "Poseidon Adventure" and not the lame remake. Happy New Year.
