Five-Hour Energy, the Life Saving Multi-Use Energy Shot

Kurt Kesler
Taking a look at the energy drink/shot 5 hour energy and how it is currently poorly advertised in society. This is made as an example if I was a marketing director of the product and how I would try to increase sales. However this review does show the useful side of the product.

The product known as 5-Hour Energy I feel is, being poorly marketed. As you may or may not know, we are only running advertisements on late night talk radio, and it is being directed toward those who may find themselves on the road or working very late. However, I do think we are missing an excellent opportunity to take strict advantage of other audiences of other type of possible users, such as diabetics and the people who like to stay up and out later to party. As you may know, the product is based on a mixture of vitamins, minerals, and caffeine. Namely, one of those vitamins is Niacin. Niacin has been shown in studies conducted by both diabetes research and even alcoholics anonymous, over the past 50 years to help against diabetes, and to provide a much safer energy boost than through the use of caffeine for someone who is taking alcohol.

I think the role of advertising in society is very important because that is how this product and others will make itself known. I am always in a fuel station, see the bottles on display, and always hear the clerk being asked by other customers, "I am going out tonight, would this work better than a red bull?" to which the clerk usually relies "I don't know". This is not a way to market our product to this crowd. I suggest moving some alcohol related advertising to Top 40 radio, and maybe some television advertising as well. In addition, as for the diabetes advertising, I would suggest some medical journals and "check-out line" magazines, with a short review of the medical studies on Niacin and of course making mention our product only has 4 calories per unit. Not only will we keep our late night talk radio market for the overnight drivers who rely on the product to let them make it till morning, but we will than garner other consumers as well.

Might I remind you that mass media influences society by making a product known, and in turn informing society if it needs a product? This not only helps the maker of a product, but society's economical future as well. Moreover, we owe it to the possible consumers by remaining as fully charged with media literacy in announcing our product as possible. We know why this product was originally made, but because the product can help out others and at the same time sell us more units, would this not be a great example of applying media literacy. By analyzing the role advertising plays in society, we can begin to focus our product where it would be better put to use. This would be a great way to also help out society on the whole. Since the time automobiles invented, we have had the big problem of people drinking and driving. They would be out at a alcohol serving establishment and take in copious amounts of alcohol, leave the place and in turn fall asleep or loose coherent mind and cause an accident resulting in property damage if not even cause death or injury. Now don't get me wrong I am not condoning such activity, in fact whenever my wife and me go out, we always have one sober while the other drives, unless we hire a taxi for the night. However, others if not most do not handle this option responsibly. I feel that after analyzing the role advertising makes, we can advertise this as a product, which would enable people to out and party and the end result would be that those who engage in drinking and driving would remain more coherent for the drive home and not cause an accident.

Also let us not forget the impact of technology on the mass media in this situation, could we not use a strong internet marketing strategy on say social networking websites that promote a party type atmosphere such as MySpace and or face book? Plus allow customers to receive coupons for future use, and knowledge of newer flavors of the product through the use of SMS cellular phone technology? That's right technology has been geared up that much that we now on certain models of "smart-phones" can now garner coupons that can be scanned by a store directly from the faceplate of these phones and allow our customers to buy more. We owe it to ourselves to strongly market this product out from the usual network. And I assure you family people like me will still use the product for the overnight drive to Florida, as well as the other drivers overnight as well.

Are you out of your mind?

A drink that makes it "safer" for a diabetic to drink alcohol? Do you know that diabetics should not drink alcohol at all and that most diabetics you would be targeting (young) do the most damage to their bodies (gastroparesis, pancreatitis, etc) while in the teen and early 20's years?

Are you really suggesting that your product SHOULD be advertised as making it "safer" to drink and drive?

The idea of referring to studies that in no way support what you propose to advertise in any conclusive, let alone correlative manner is insane, it is irresponsible, and it is reprehensible. Moreover, if you were in charge of advertising for FHE, you would lead your company straight into liability hell with those antics!

Grow up. You speak of literacy: why don't you try becoming more literate, and do some serious research on these things, as well as a few unbiased studies before suggesting these things. We need fewer kids killing themselves trying to get around their p
