Location
Once you have decided to get a chandelier, the next thing you should consider is where you want to hang it. Usually people like to flaunt their chandeliers in their dining room or hallways - something grand to welcome their guests. Take into account the weight of your chandelier, heavy ones will require a junction box strong enough to support the weight and hold the fixture in place. Make sure to check that your ceiling is suitable for such heavy objects.
Hang your chandelier at least 3 feet over the tops of the tables (especially in the dining area), to keep heads from bumping into the light fixture that can be pretty fragile and delicate.
Light
Bear in mind that a chandelier is not the best source of light, so if you want the room to be brightly litted, you should install a brighter light source. You may install a dimmer for your chandelier so you can control the atmosphere of the room. Prevent glare by buying a chandelier that comes with mini shades, or jazz it up DIY-style with your own creativity. An economical and practical idea is shading it with paper lanterns or homemade shades decorated with dried leaves. Just remember not to place such shades close to any naked bulbs, turning it into a potential fire hazard.
You can change the look of your room just by changing the shades of your chandelier. Red lanterns with plastic plum flowers are perfect for Chinese New Year, while mistletoe tied to your chandelier is perfect for a Christmas dinner party.
Size
There are some who do not want their room to be overshadowed by a chandelier and decide to choose smaller ones. Remember, a tiny chandelier looks totally out of place. Chandeliers are supposed to be large light fixtures, or else it will defeat the purpose of having a decorative light fixture because the walls and furniture of your room will suppress the effect of the chandelier. Bigger is usually better for chandeliers.
Remember : Chandeliers are dust magnets, so if you're planning to hang one on a high ceiling, you should be prepared to hire help to clean it, or invest in a good ladder. On the other hand, you can get a simple design that will not require intensive cleaning.
