Fixing Your Cracked Laptop Screen: Best Buy's Repair Service

The Geek Squad Came Through Again

First off, if your laptop screen is cracked, let me send my deepest sympathies. I repaired my cracked laptop screen several months ago and know that it's a frustrating and time-consuming process. Hopefully my experience can help you to go through this process as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Honestly, I wasn't even sure that my laptop screen was cracked at first. I figured that "cracked" meant that there was a physical break that I could feel, but the crack is only something that you can see, and you know that your laptop is cracked when it blocks part of your display. Panicked, I took my computer to several local computer stores after I dropped it and had it confirmed early on that I did have a cracked laptop screen.

I have to say that from the beginning, those Best Buy Geek Squad guys were the most helpful of any other stores. The Best Buy standard repair cost (with screen) was $500, but the geek that was helping me assured me that he could do better than that. If I bought the screen on my own and brought it in to Best Buy, he could do it for under $100.

At this point, I wasn't sure what to do. A used screen could run about $180 while a brand-new screen was $230. With repair costs, this cracked laptop screen would cost 50% than my computer was worth. I called the manufacturer and sent the computer in for them to take a look. Of course, since it was my fault that I had a cracked laptop screen, they wouldn't pay for the fix and would charge me upwards of $700 to repair. Best Buy was looking better everyday.

Before taking the computer back in to the Geek Squad, I did double check that it was operating properly. This is really easy to do if you have a desktop computer handy - just plug the monitor into your laptop and you can use the desktop screen instead of your cracked laptop screen. I opted to order a new laptop screen just because I didn't trust any of the used laptop screen sites.

I took my cracked laptop screen back into Best Buy and the repairs were completed within a few days. The best part is that it only cost $50, which was well worth it from my standpoint. Yes, it was a frustrating process, but having my laptop back in working order was much less frustrating than buying a new computer.

Where did you buy the computer screen? Cause i need a cheap one. So far the most i have seen is 90 bucks.

Hi, I wanted to know how much the screen you bought costs, and where you got it. If I can get the repairs done for $50, that would be GREAT. I also have to get my battery replaced too, and my warranty expired, so money is tight. If you can tell me how much that screen cost, I can manage my finances accordingly. Thank you for the intel!

What happens when your laptop screen is cracked? Will the crack spread or damage the computer content?

  • Rodney5/2/2010

I bought mine online at www.laptopscreen.com their price are reasonable and I replaced mine, didn't have to pay for someone to put in for. Its easy to insult. The screws are located at the edge of the laptop, remove the screws than the bezel, unhook the component, insult the new screen and go from there. By tracing your steps back, meaning you took the screws out first, you put them on last, thats it your done. You now have working screen for your laptop.

If your still not sure look it up on Youtube,..."how to replace your laptop screen"
