Fixing a Small Aquarium Leak in Your Fish Tank

Shannon Frye
So you've noticed that the carpet is starting to get wet or you notice that there is a little bit of water running down the side of the aquarium. Your first guess is that you have a leak in the side of your fish tank. You will first want to make sure that it isn't your filter. If your filter has a crack then the water will run down the filter system down the side of the aquarium. Unplug the power filter and take it off to see if you still have the same problem. You might also have a filter which is causing the water to flow up and over the side of the aquarium.

You will now need to start draining water from the tank is you know that there is a leak. You will want to place the fish into another fish tank using the water that is in your fish tank. You will want to catch the fish and place them in another fish tank. Be careful when you catch the fish in a net because some spiny fish such as catfish can actually get their fins and spines stuck in the fish net. Once the fish are in a different fish tank you will then be able to drain the tank completely. If the leak is near the bottom you will need to move the rock and decorations to the opposite side of the fish tank.

You will now have to purchase silicon sealant. You might need to purchase this from the pet store. You can call different places ahead of time to make sure that they have it before you waste your time driving around to stores which do not have silicon sealant. Once you have the sealant you will want to make sure that you have a razor blade as well. You might need to purchase some of these if you do not have any because you will need them to remove the old silicon sealant from the tank. The tank is leaking because there's something wrong with the sealant.

Now you will need to remove sealant from the entire area that is leaking. Use the razor blade to scrape away all of the sealant from that area. You will now want to use a clean and dry rag to wipe the entire area. The area will be completely dry and clean in order for the sealant to hold. You will want to squeeze the sealant out of the tube diagonally and force the sealant right into the crack. Make sure that the area is completely sealed on both sides. If you have to apply more feel free to do so. You can use something to push the sealant into the cracks.
