Fixing the Windows 7 Error Code 0x80070057

TechTips
Windows 7 can have some interesting issues and I have run into a few error codes from time to time and the most recent one was Windows 7 error code 0x80070057. The exact error code reads like this:

"An internal error has occurred: The parameter is incorrect: (0×80070057)"

This error most commonly happens when you are trying to do a full backup of your Windows 7 system. The root cause is large registry values for commands during the backup process that can unfortunately cause the 0x80070057 error. In this guide I will explain what I did to overcome this error.

I was trying to perform a system backup using the Windows 7 built-in backup function to my external western digital hard drive, when I received the 0x80070057 error code. So what I did was set the virtual memory to a much larger value, I was hoping that maybe this added memory would be enough to allow the large registry values to pass through the OS cleanly.

To increase your virtual memory, follow these steps:

1 - Click Start
2 - Click Control Panel
3 - Click System Security
4 - Click System
5 - Click Advanced System Settings
6 - Click Advanced Tab
7 - Click Settings Button (Under performance)
8 - Click Advanced Tab
9 - Click Change Button (Under Virtual Memory)
10 - Change the Value (I set mine from 2000MB to 4000MB under custom size)
11 - Click Set
12 - Click OK

Once you have changed the value you might want to reboot your PC to ensure the changes will be enforced. Once you have rebooted you can retry the backup to your external hard drive, my problem was fixed and the backup was successful. If you still are having problems you might want to download a registry cleaning program that can possibly fix any errors in your registry and hopefully free up some space and fix your issue.

I suggest if you want a program that does a good job of cleaning up registry issues you can download CCLeaner. The software is very useful and well known and widely used, CNET gave it good marks and it tested clean of spyware or any other malicious programs. Make sure that before you make any changes using CCLeaner you read the user's guide and know what you are doing before you edit too much. Changes to the registry can cause serious problems, just make sure you are careful.

Well I hope you are able to fix your problem with the Windows 7 error 0x80070057.
