If you heard a grinding noise while applying the brake, it indicates one thing: a worn-out brake lining that's rubbing against the vehicle disc or drum. Perhaps, you may have ignored your brake too long, hence why you didn't know that it had been worn out.
To fix the problem, first, replace the brake linings.
Second, have your mechanic check on your brake drums or disc, then based on the advice of your mechanic, if the damage is extreme replace the disc or drums, if the damage is minimal, the discs or drums must be machined in order to smooth out the damage caused by the worn out linings, repair only the affected portion where the grinding sound is coming from, either front or rear wheel.
If grinding sounds is ignored for a longer time it could be costly to repair it, so be sure to have your brakes check for a worn out linings for a certain period of time before grinding sound occurred to avoid costly repairs.
