Fizzyology

Juliet Cook
my prickly pears my bitten & sucked knee
caps like a swarm of fire ants the sudden heat
rash the small blisters manifest & burst open
my sticky cluster of tiny grapes filled with sugar
water salt nacre a trickle of mysterious seltzer a
sweet baby waterfall on crushed ice on chipped teeth
an ache an itch no matter how I limit my exposure
no matter how I temper it with cream I can't seem
to turn golden I stay pink raw-tinged mouth far reaches
of the tongue & throat slick mussel I can't quite scratch
I can't quite capture my captive bead impending rupture
I try to numb like stuffing cotton inside a seething clam
I try to calm the clamor of a throbbing colony I unthread
my spit-bred invocation of blister pearls I spill a choker
