Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL: Off-Campus Housing Ideas for Students
How to Find Properties for Rent in the St. Augustine Area and Flagler County
If the traditional apartment complex is more of your style, St. Augustine has many communities, but these often come with limitations. Most of the apartment communities located in the St. Augustine metropolitan area range from two extremes: they are either attached with income restrictions or they are for the extremely wealthy. Should you be a typical student and make a low income until you have received your degree, then the income-restricted community may be for you. Be forewarned though, when you graduate and receive your high-paying career of your dreams your new income may force you to move.
Another alternative option is to go through a real estate agency. Many advertise rental condominiums on their websites and Craigslist for very reasonable rates. One bedrooms will usually start in the $700-$800 range, and two bedrooms will usually rent for about $100 more. This off-campus housing option is particularly helpful for students who are considering permanently settling into the area, as you would be already dealing with a realtor and he or she can help keep you informed about the local market.
Finally, one of the best deals for off-campus while attending Flagler College is a short 20 to 30 minute drive. Palm Coast is a town directly south of St. Augustine in Flagler County. Here, students can rent a three or four bedroom house for under $1000 per month. While it is a little way to drive, the attractive price and roommate-friendly setting will allow for carpool, especially if more than one roommate has the same class schedule. Homes are mostly new or recently constructed and are advertised in the Jacksonville metropolitan area of Craigslist.
As with all rental properties, make sure you understand lease terms, security deposit expectations, and general tenant responsibilities. Also, be sure to start your search early so you can locate the property that is right for you and your budget, otherwise you will have to settle for something that may not be as fulfilling. When in doubt, or in a last-minute time crunch, do not hesitate to contact a realtor. He or she either has, or can direct you to rental units perfect for your off-campus housing needs.
