It is a fact that most computers require extra storage or a way to backup their files in an emergency. A few years ago all documents, files, sounds, and pictures, were stored on cassettes, floppy disk, or other now outdated storage devices. A few years later the hard drives were invented which included a very useful gizmo called the CD Drive followed by the ever popular DVD drives. Computer users now stored or burned data on CD Disk or DVD Disk which provided much more storage space. Many also used the disk to backup important files. Fast forward to current technology and the development of the thumb drive, flash drive, or memory sticks. These small storage units are equipped with enormous storage capacity. And the ability to easily move data stored on the drive to another computer.

Flash Memory

Flash memory works a bit differently. Remove the flash drive from the computer and it still retains all the data. Flash memory does not require an outside power source to preserve the data in the device even if it is not connected to the computer power source.

The flash drive makes it possible for the average computer user to store large amounts of data on a small drive and go mobile. Take it with you to the office or on a trip and install the information on another computer via the USB port. All flash drives are basically the same. Simply plug the Flash Drive into any available USB port on the computer. Windows' should automatically recognizes the flash drive.

Flash drives are available in all types of sizes, shapes, and forms. There are flash drives shaped like your favorite cartoon character, flash drives shaped like keys, flash drives shaped like cars.
