Flash Drives: Do You Need One?

Derek Odom
Whether you are a student, a journalist, a photographer, or write articles for the web, chances are that if you use a computer daily, you could use a flash drive. They are compact, lightweight, and many of them even come with a keychain attached. Sizes range from 512 MB to 8GB whoppers. Depending on what kind of media you wish to store, there is a flash drive available to suit your needs.

Several companies offer these on the market, and in several different shapes, sizes and colors. There are also a few varieties of styles as well. Some flash drives actually recess into the housing via a sliding thumb bar, others fold into themselves to protect the information, while still others have a screw or snap-on cap that fits over the end.

Think of these little gems as separate and extra hard drives. They store information just the same, and the files and folders saved on its disk are viewed in exactly the same manner. They can keep movies, documents, pictures, spreadsheets, music and anything else you need to have `on the go`. This is great for college students who are constantly doing their research and assignments on different computers. All of it stores in one, compact space, and is wonderfully mobile.

Musicians find them handy, as well. The ease of carrying their music from the studio home, to the radio-station, or simply to parties where they can play it for everyone and show off their stuff makes them much more useful than their price would imply. They are also good for filling up with your favorite songs and going to a friend's house for the evening. Plug it into the computer and random-play hours of music from a tiny device you keep in your pocket.

They can be used by the office professional, as well. PowerPoint presentations, important documents or recordings, even entire databases are easily stored on these flash drives. There are endless uses for the devices, and if you have ever been annoyed at not having information with you when you want it, a flash drive comes highly recommended.

They can be purchased almost anywhere, too. For less than twenty dollars you could be the proud owner of a flash drive that carries your important files wherever you go! They will not scratch like a CD can, as long as there is access to a USB port the information can be quickly and readily accessed. And yes, ladies, they even come in pink.
