Flash Fiction: Angels Are Always Watching

Cherie Bowser
Someone was knocking at the door. She was a poor, lonely widow, sitting in her comfortable brown leather reclining chair, as she has been daily, staring at the television, her body unable to move as her depression was worsening. Her children were grown and had moved away and she lost her job a few months ago and has been sitting in that old comfortable recliner with many tasks around the house left undone. The knock grew louder and louder. She glanced at the clock on the fireplace mantel that read 10:00 am.

After five minutes of continuous knocking, she finally got up out of her comfortable recliner and dragged her slow moving feet to the door. She slowly opened the door only to find that no one was there. She noticed a tree branch was bent and was touching the door. The knock must have been from the tree branch she thought to herself. As she was closing the door, her eyes moved to the ground and she noticed a little white rabbit on the worn doormat. As their eyes met, the little white rabbit scampered off into the bushes. As she walked back to her chair, she had a good feeling inside. The white rabbit reminded her of her Grandmother who just recently passed away. She spent the day in her leather brown chair watching television and thinking of the white rabbits that her Grandmother loved so much.

The next morning, she was in her usual position in her comfortable brown leather recliner that she loved so much, when someone was knocking at the door. She glanced over at the clock on the mantel and she noticed that it was exactly 10:00 am. She was thinking in her mind, could it be the tree branch again. She thought it was kind of strange that the tree branch didn't make any noise since 10:00 am the previous morning. She slowly dragged herself off her reclining chair and headed towards the door. She slowly opened the door and no one was there. She looked down and there was the little white rabbit again. Their eyes met and he scampered off into the bushes. When the white rabbit hopped off the doormat, she noticed something was there. She bent down and picked up the most beautiful angel ornament she has ever seen. The angel was holding a little white rabbit. She picked up the ornament and headed back to her chair and spent the rest of the day watching television as she held the little angel close to her hands.

The next morning, someone was knocking at the door. She knew the time was 10:00 am before even looking at the clock and was out of her chair faster than ever since her depression, with the hopes of spotting the little white rabbit that has been giving her joy the last several days. As she reached to the door and opened it, her eyes met the little white rabbit on the doormat. Just as their eyes met, she heard a crashing sound that sounded like an earthquake. As she headed back to the living room, she was shocked to see a truck had slammed through the wall and had destroyed her comfortable brown leather reclining chair.
