Flash Mobbing

Katie Just
High school has changed very little over the years. Seniors have to leave their mark, and give underclassmen a legacy to continue when they become seniors as well. As long as no one breaks the law, senior stunts can be a way to come together as comrades and share in one last hoorah before college, or working a nine-to-five has to spoil the fun.

Flash mobbing is where a large group of people gather, do something outrageous, and run off quickly. It's not illegal as long as no one breaks a law such as vandalizing property, causing bodily harm, or trespass. One person heads up the flash mob, usually the class president, by forwarding an email or passing out fliers to only the senior class.

The email or fliers are then passed from senior to senior until the entire class is notified. For those that don't have email, this notice can be text messaged to a cell phone, or the email can be printed out. The flash mob announcement should say where the mob will gather, what they will do, and what time this will happen. Seniors will have to get together to synchronize watches the day before the event, to make sure that everyone meets on time.

Flash mobbing is something that takes more time to plan than to actually do. It can be showing up to a shopping mall parking lot or public park and releasing one balloon for every senior while yelling "____ High School seniors rule." That's just an example. The participating class can decide amongst themselves as to what is to be done or said and go from there. Just keep mindful of the laws when organizing the flash mob.

Flash mobbing should be done during the day, and in a place that is far enough away from traffic that motorists will not be so caught up in wondering what you all are doing that it causes a traffic accident. The length of time it takes to flash mob is about a minute and a half to two minutes. You just do something that grabs people's attention, and leave.

Parents should know about the flash mob, and could be of help if transporting balloons or other props, and class mates is needed. Parents also may have better ideas as to what could be done during the flash mob, if the group is unable to come up with something they all agree upon.
