FlashForward Canceled by ABC

Ryan Christopher DeVault
FlashForward was canceled by ABC on Thursday night. There had been rumors that FlashForward would get canceled, but with the fall line-ups not due out till next week, ABC had been holding back news on what they would be doing with their shows. The news ended up being bad for fans of FlashForward though, and this was something that they probably should have expected. The ratings for FlashForward have been dipping a lot in the second half of their first season, and for the May 6 episode, the Nielsen ratings said that FlashForward only drew 1.75 million viewers. That was only good enough for third place in the time slot, well behind both Survivor 20 and Bones.

The 8 p.m. time slot on Thursday nights has just seemed to get worse for ABC and FlashForward, and this past Thursday was probably what tipped the scales for the ABC brass that couldn't make up their minds. Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains pulled in 12.81 million, Bones on Fox drew in 8.88 million viewers, and Community on NBC was able to attract 4.49 million viewers. The worst news for FlashForward though, was that they placed dead last (5th) among the networks when it came to the 18-49 demographic that advertisers most care about. Even The Vampire Diaries on CW beat them out, and Survivor tripled their numbers in that category.

FlashForward was supposed to be one of those big news shows that were going to carry ABC this year, but the audiences just didn't stick around after the first few weeks that the show was on the air. Then they delayed a number of episodes until spring rolled around, and by then even more viewers had simply tuned out. There are only a few episodes of FlashForward left, but fans should prepare themselves for disappointment, not just because their show has been canceled, but because there are most likely going to be unresolved storylines in the season finale. Thursday is a tough night for any show to survive, and FlashForward just became a big victim of this past television season.

This is so dumb just as the show was getting good ABC had to cancel it. Why doesn't ABC just get the writers from lost or prison break to finish. This show is so good you can't cancel it. There is no other reason to watch this stupid channel anyway. I HATE THIS!

This decision made was horrible. Flashforward became my favorite show on TV after just one season and I no longer have respect for ABC so I will not be watching it.

Darn you ABC! Now there is no lost, What are we supposed to watch now? Flash forward was the best show after lost. Screw YOU ABC! I am done watching!

I only tune to ABC for FlashForward and V. The way they played around with both these shows, it is a wonder that they had any kind of following. Now that they are cancelling FlashForward and won't be bringing back V until mid-season (if at all), I probably will never tune to ABC after the last FlashForward episode. I see no reason to check out any of the new pilots next season, because they will probably cancel, move the time slot, or place the ones I like on hiatus like they did with these.

Great concept, good cast, bad writing. I swear ABC must have hired the same writers Disney used for Pearl Harbor and Pirates 3 for the second half of the season. That whole Joseph Fiennes, his doctor wife and the lame English Physicist story line just sucked. They should have killed off the doctor wife and lame physicist and hired different writers.

Even though I feel sorry for the fans that stuck around for Flash Forward throughout its first season and the employee of the show, I can't help but ironically chuckle. This is what ABC and the show Flash Forward gets for messing with the spectacular show that was Ugly Betty! Ugly Betty was fine where it was before it was moved to Fridays (then Wednesday) so Flash Forward could have its time slot.

This should show ABC not to mess with a good thing because what you think may improve something will in all actuality be the death of your network. Is there even a number one show on ABC in any demographic anymore? Wait, there's V.

The way ABC is going, over three thirds of the Fall line up will be all new pilots. Not that new shows aren't good or welcomed, but like I said earlier in this post, why mess with something that didn't need fixed?

Bad move, but then we're used to ABC making bad choices in programming...
