Flat Belly Diet: Is it a Fad or the Secret to Success?

Arvy Smith
What is the one thing that most Americans are plagued by and seem to need help with? If you answered their weight and waist lines then you have guessed correctly. From Slim Fast to the South Beach Diet, people from all walks of life have had body image on the brain for years. It seems that the magic formula for a popular diet are beautiful people doing endorsements, a new take on old dieting methods and someone famous to endorse it or talk about it.

Well, the Flat Belly Diet seems to have hit a home run as the latest and greatest weight loss method to hit the market. Rachel Ray of Food Network fame, recently mentioned the Flat Belly Diet and caused a frenzy of searches for the latest weight loss gimmick, and I mean that in a nice way.

The basic premise of the diet talks about eating monounsaturated fatty acids or MUFAs at every meal. While eating good fats is a good thing, it seems that this diet plan is just a take on the things that we already know. The diet emphasizes eating sensibly, which means fruits, veggies and cutting back on meat intake. It seems that the only change up here is the talk of eating more MUFAs. This is hardly innovative in my mind, but who knows?

The online part of the program offers to track your progress and gives you others online you can interact with who are on the diet. The one thing that bothers me is that they say that exercise is optional. They do however express that exercise can only enhance your results. I am not really aware of many diet programs that tell you that exercise is optional. It also seems to be one of the biggest reasons many are flocking to this diet, seeing it as the Holy Grail - the magic pill that they can take to lose weight.

If you truly want to lose weight, I feel that a sensible and reasonable diet, moderation of food intake and regular exercise is the key. While diets seem to be only for the short term, you really need more of a long-term plan if you want to keep the weight off. The title "Flat Belly Diet" and the fact that it was mentioned on a major TV show scream overnight success. If you do decide to try out the program, be sure to make it a permanent decision to get healthy, not a temporary one.
