Small Town Feel with Big City Amenities
Flat Rock, MI 48134
Like many twenty and thirty something year olds, I grew up hearing stories about the "old days" from older relatives. About days when neighbors helped neighbors and communities where kids could play freely. Where everything in life wasn't about business and money and life was lived at a slower pace. I grew up fascinated by this enchanted place, wondering where it had gone. As I grew older I felt myself wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of my disengaged community, but wasn't ready to let go of the city amenities and resources. Trying to find a great town with the mix of old town charm but new age lifestyles was difficult, but finally found in Flat Rock, Michigan.
Found by mistake, but found nonetheless, Flat Rock proved to be the fantasy land I had always envisioned. Conveniently located within a twenty minute drive of both Detroit and Toledo, and in close proximity of I-75 and I-275 residents are able to savor the benefits of a small town, yet thrive in the big business world we now live in. Family life is something residents take great pride in and the city of Flat Rock makes that an easy accomplishment with all we have to offer.
There are also two parks within city limits. Huroc Park, which features scenic landscape, prime fishing, a playground and gazebo while the Flat Rock City Park offers an outdoor ice skating rink and warming building, tennis and basketball courts, baseball fields, a wading fountain for children in the summer months, historical buildings, playscape, library and more. Year round activities such as Teddy Bear Picnics, Family movie nights in the park, Christmas tree lighting ceremony and visits from Santa are just a few of the unlimited events shared with the community.
Our newest addition was just completed in 2004; a two-story, 50,000 square foot community center which houses a three lane running track, a considerably sized fitness center, six-lane competitive pool and aquatic center housing a zero depth entry pool with a waterslide, fountain and more. The new center also offers a gymnasium, banquet facilities, meeting rooms, staffed babysitting area, senior center, basketball and volleyball courts, just to name a few of the many amenities.
When I first stumbled upon this town I thought there would be no way I could afford to live in such a beautiful and rising city, but surprisingly costs are low compared to nearby areas. A newly built 2500 square foot colonial with 4 bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, 3 car attached garage with basement, large yard and extra amenities will only cost in the $250,000 range or a smaller, older ranch style home with 3 bedrooms, basement, and 1200 square foot can cost anywhere from the $120's to the $170's depending on the upgrades.
Finding the perfect hometown isn't always easy, but believe it or not, caring communities do still exist after all. For my family, Flat Rock has been a blessing and with a little luck and research, you too can find the perfect place to call home.
