Flavorful Cooking with Olive Oil

Greg Smith
Due to the numerous health benefits and great flavor, olive oil is one of the wonders of cooking.

Olive oil has been used for centuries for not just its impact on the physical side (soft skin, silky healthy hair) but also for its cooking and nutritious attributes. But as of recently, it has become even more popular due to studies that show it is extremely healthy for the inside of your body. A monounsaturated fat, olive oil has shown to lower bad cholesterol and also lower your blood pressure. At the same time it raises your good cholesterol.

One thing to remember when dealing with olive oil, especially when cooking, is that it contains a low smoke point. When heated, olive oil tends to get very smoky at high temperatures, and that smoke can sometimes replace the flavor in food. So it's best used to cook at low temperatures if possible or make sure you keep a fan on over your over to remove the smoke.

Here is some more information you can use with cooking oil:

Due to the fact that olive oil contains a low smoking point, it may not be the best choice to use for high heat cooking or especially for frying. The best way to cook with olive oil is to sauté over a low to medium heat.

Another way you can incorporate olive oil is to combine it with high heat oil such as canola oil, clarified butter or even vegetable oil. The smoke point will be raised and you won't experience a lot of smoke getting into your food. And as a plus you still get to partake of the good nature of the benefits of olive oil.

Types of olive oil:

Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Should be used to sprinkle over dishes that are already cooked. Used in salad dressings, marinating or add to sauces for great flavor. This can also be used as an alternative to butter on Italian bread or potatoes.

Virgin Olive Oil - Not as expensive but still has a beautiful smell and great taste. Better choice for cooking that extra virgin and be used with canola or butter for increased heat cooking.

Olive Oil - No other types of oil are blended with this king of oil. This is just pure pressed olive oil. It is created through a process of refinement which removes a lot of its flavor. It's best used as a substitute cooking oil for canola or vegetable oil or grease. Has a high smoke point but really doesn't have any flavor.

These are just a few varieties of olive oil you can use. Choose wisely and use the right oil for you choice.
