First of all, it's tasteless. Flax won't make your lips pucker or your face crumple. You won't have to run to the sink to "set it free" from your taste buds. Even my husband, the king of detecting and objecting to my healthy discoveries, can't put his tongue on it.
Now that we're clear about that, how about some of its amazing health benefits?
Flax if the richest source of omega-3 fatty acids and lignans (potent cancer fighters) known in nature. Emerging scientific evidence demonstrating health benefits of omega-3 fats, particularly omega-3s from fish and flaxseed sources, is BIG news in the health community. Scientific claims have been made connecting the relationship between eating plans high in omega-3s and decreased incidence of diseases and disease symptoms. Heart disease, depression, asthma, arthritis, and lupus are just a few of the conditions that report benefiting from this omega-3 intake.
Wait, there's more! Flax eases constipation, lowers cholesterol, may help lower blood pressure and balances your blood sugar which steadies your energy and stamina. It clears up acne, lubricates joints AND is rich in protein, B vitamins, vitamin E, beta carotene, calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc.
The benefits of Flax were known to the Ancients. Hippocrates recommended eating it for inflammations of the mucous membranes. In the 8th-century King Charlemagne of France passed a law requiring his subjects to eat Flax and stay healthy! Mahatma Gandhi said "Wherever flax seeds become a regular food item among the people, there will be better health."
Finally, our little Flax friend is so versatile! Sprinkle it on your oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, casseroles, meatloaf, and salads. Rule of thumb; if it's edible you can add Flax to it.
Final rule of thumb; eat everything in moderation, including Flax. Limit your consumption to 3 tablespoons per day.
So, there you have. The Flax, all the Flax and just the Flax, ma'am.
