Flemish Giant Bunny: The Ultimate Easter Bunny

Elisia Yun
The Flemish Giant Bunny is quite the sight to see as they grow to quite gigantic sizes despite their gentle nature. The Flemish Giant Bunny can grow to be bigger than a dog, and is definitely an interesting pet to own.

While you may believe that they'd be famous just for their size, the Flemish Giant Bunny has only become famous in the 1900's when breeders started showing off their Flemish Giant Bunny at county fairs and shows. The Flemish Giant Bunny is most prized for their fur, and their meat. They also make excellent pets for people as they have a very gentle nature, and are quite a wonder to have around.

Flemish Giant Bunnies usually weigh around 14 pounds, and come in many varieties of colors. Blues, whites, blacks, fawns, sandy tones and light grays are possible colors for the Flemish Giant Bunny. These bunnies also have wonderful and beautiful erect ears; in fact, it is one of the musts for Flemish Giant Bunny, and what is most looked for. Their eyes should be bright and alert. Their hindquarters should be nice and thick and their flesh should be nice and well-formed with glossy, thick fur.

One of the benefits of having a Flemish Giant Bunny is the fact that they are easier to take care of. Unlike other breeds of smaller bunnies, the Flemish Giant Bunny is not too keen on running around and hopping around; instead, they will enjoy sleeping and lying around. They also enjoy eating, and will eat a lot more than the other smaller breeds of bunnies. Speaking of bites, the Flemish Giant Bunny will inflict more pain when they are to bite or to scratch you compared to the smaller bunnies; however, because of their gentle nature, bites and scratches should be a rarity - especially if you know how to handle them.

Because of their large size, it is important to have room for the bunny to move around, and thus you will need to have quite a bit of space to spare for these bunnies. Their cages have to be at least 30 by 48 inches due to their large size. This is of course the smallest acceptable cage size for this breed. The more room you have for them the better although you should also remember that they do not need to move around as much as their smaller cousins.

There are faults in Flemish Giant Bunnies that you have to look out for. For example, too much fat and chubbiness is frowned upon along with baggy skin. Their shape should be well-toned and tight. Their coats should be even color, and not patchy. Because they are often bred for their fur, it is important that they have nice, healthy looking fur as well. Their hindquarters need to look nicely rounded.

The Flemish Giant Bunny is a very interesting breed of bunny around, and can make quite the pet. They are amazingly sized, and very gentle to have around. In fact, they make quite the Easter bunny!

Rabbits are not for easter. They are not Easter Bunnies. Please promote responsible pet ownership rather than impulse purchases for kids around Easter. Rabbits are third most popular animals dropped of at animal shelters.
