Flint, Michigan Man Dies in Snowy Car Accident After Severe Weather Hits

Jason
Winter weather has come, snow is piling up on the ground. In the last several days, inches of snow has fallen across the Midwest. The extreme weather has caused accidents and even some fatalities.

Michigan's southeast location received over 10 inches of snow in various locations. The snowfall reached from Detroit all the way up to Saginaw, about 2 hours north.

Flint's greater area received a foot of snow New Years Eve and continued to receive snow throughout the next day, totaling to approximately 15 inches all together, the most snow the area has seen at one time period in years.

During another snow fall yesterday early morning, Robert Strickland, 39, was on his way to work at 4 a.m. The engineer usually takes I-69 to I-75 south to get to his job in Auburn Hills.

After hitting an icy patch on the highway, Robert lost control of his 2003 Malibu and hit the rightside guardrail on I-75. Strickland left his vehicle to check the damage done by hitting the guardrail on the passenger side of his vehicle.

While attempting to get out, he was struck by another oncoming car who wouldn't be able to see Strickland around the corner bend where he had hit the guardrail. Strickland was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead several hours later due to internal bleeding.

Strickland leaves behind a family of three. He married his wife Linda in 2000 and they have two children together.

"Accidents happen. My husband was a great man. He dedicated his life to his work and family," Linda says tearfully.

"Winter weather is dangerous. He was just on his way to work and happened to drive across some ice."

The accident happened shortly before the Grand Blanc/Holly exit. The driver who allegedly hit Strickland did not stop.

"I hope whoever hit him will come forward and say he did it. Accidents happen and you can't control the weather but I need an apology," she cried.

Strickland was born and raised in Grand Blanc. He then moved to Davison with his wife when he was married eight years ago. Together, they built a four bedroom home and welcomed the arrival of their daughter Jennie in 2001. In 2004, Linda gave birth to son Marcus after doctors told her she was unable to have any more children due to a fertility problem.

"I don't know how we're going to get through this. But our families are strong. We will have to be there for each other. I will teach my children what a good man their father was," Linda says.

Great report of a sad story. We got dumped on pretty good here in the north, too.

Wow, I didn't catch this on the local news...knew they'd had a big dump of snow downstate, but what a tragedy. I know a good deal of hit and run accidents have been highlighted in the news. You simply have to take responsibility for accidents. Probably the driver was drunk, or under the influence, and didn't want the get nailed. It's so horrible for the family anyhow, but to know your loved one was mowed down and left...makes it all the worse!

Really a terrific report, Jason...thanks for writing it! Kim from Saint Ignace, MI

Good reporting... I was in Flint a few weeks ago when it had snowed. I had to fly out of Flint...the interstates was not to bad but the side roads was a joke especially when your from the south and not use to it. Sorry to hear the weather cost this man his life. the family will be in my prayers. I pray that the person who hit him will come forward.
