Flippin' Out Crepes & Coffee tempted and taunted palates at Taste Addison in May, leaving hopeful fans waiting until opening day on July 2. Chef Scott Hoffner originally planned to head the creperie in May, but the Dallas Mavericks' championship season extended his commitment as Tyson Chandler's personal chef. After celebrating the playoff victory on a giant Slip 'n Slide, he is dishing up crepes in Addison.

Crepetacular Menu
The menu features a variety of savory and sweet options, ranging from $3 to $8.90. Thankfully, the selection does not take a predictable approach to creating adventurous flavors. (Read: There is no Tex Mex crepe.) The diverse entrees include vegetarian fare, such as the Cesar salad crepe, meaty choices, such as the Philly cheese crepe, and sweet desserts, such as the requisite Nutella crepe.

Taste Test
The crepes are light and tender, but slightly thicker than traditional plated crepes. They are like a delicate version of flour tortillas sturdy enough for the chefs to roll into a car-friendly cone or burrito-style.

At $3.80, the Laredo survives the road test with its grip-worthy girth. Stuffed with potatoes, eggs, pasilia peppers, and smoked cheddar, it looks like a big burrito. Nibbling the components separately reveals a subtle sweetness in the crepe and stronger heat in the peppers, but the combination creates a pleasant medley of flavors. The accompanying spicy sauce adds a complementary dose of heat without overwhelming the crepe.

Half of the Laredo is an ample portion and the remaining half fares well as a leftover.

The drink offerings include a variety of caffeinated concoctions, frosty treats and simple sippers, such as water and lemonade. Chef Dan's fresh iced coffee, $1.90, is potent but lacks the unpleasant burnt aftertaste and bitter tinge often found in coffeehouse brews.

Atmosphere

The sparkly, friendly staff has enough personality to keep an imaginary food-centric reality show interesting far beyond the opening credits. ("Ace of Crepes," anyone?)

Surprisingly, the small building is open for customers to place orders and peruse the self-serve coffee bar. The drive-through lane will likely serve as a more comfortable option during peak times.

Flippin' Out does not have a seating area, but the crepes' handy shape and ample wrapping makes them easy to enjoy in the car. If the substantial crepes cause a case of car claustrophobia, there are plenty of scenic parks nearby. Skip the sanitizing wipes and use the absorbent paper sack as a placemat or bench cover.

The Flipside
Perhaps it was patron oversight, but my order lacked one vital component--a napkin. Anyone who sporadically visits the drive-through lane at a fast food restaurant likely has a lifetime supply of ketchup and napkins. However, napkins are a mandatory crepe accessory lest one walks around with a lap full of Laredo or Nutella moustache.

The packaging makes for a portable lunch, but does not retain the heat as long as its fast food counterparts. Inadvertently holding the precious parcel too close to the car's AC vents, which are on full blast during the summer, is a novice mistake. Future orders will travel in the backseat.

The Last Bite
Flippin' Out makes a fun addition to the other distinctive purveyors of rolled food, such as Tokyo One and Torchy's Tacos, in the area. Given the portion size, quality and service, the food comes at a fair price. The varied filling choices make it worth repeat visits.
