FLO TV: Personal TV Review

Becky D
The FLO TV Personal Television is a fairly new product on the market that can be purchased for about $250 with a free six month subscription. It is a handheld digital television with a 3.5 inch screen specifically designed for watching television.

While being a toy that it by no means necessary, the FLO TV is a neat gadget to have around. It is slightly larger than an iPhone so it is easy to transport to wherever you might like to use it. I use mine mostly at the gym by setting it on the machine I am using and attaching headphones. Being able to watch my favorite TV shows makes the time go by much faster. I can also see it being handy for people who travel a lot or to keep kids entertained while they are waiting. I recently began using it to watch the news in the bathroom as I get ready for work in the morning to save some time. The FLO TV does not need to be plugged into anything. However, its battery life is only about 5 hours so you should keep the power cable available.

The subscription service to actually watch television on it costs about $15 per month. This fee is not bad compared to what I pay for cable in my house, but I wish the two could be combined in some way. The coverage map is very spotty, but if you live near a large city you shouldn't have trouble connecting. I have not have an issue with buffering or skipping the way I do when I try to watch television over the internet.

The quality of the product actually surprised me. The screen is clear with bright, vivid colors. The built in speakers have good sound quality and go loud enough to listen to comfortably. The touch screen is responsive and doesn't require you to press down hard. There are buttons on the side to adjust volume and a place to plug in headphones. It comes with a little stand attached so you can set it on a flat surface and adjust it to any angle to watch it. Set up was easy as well. You just needed the serial number and your credit card to get service set up on the website.

The product only gets about 15 channels with no local channels included. I have not had a problem with this since the included ones are the channels I tend to watch the most anyway such as ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, etc.

While the product is a bit pricy, you get what you pay for. It works wonderfully and does exactly what I was looking for it to do.

Better to use that $400 plus (first 18 months) by installing a flat screen in the
bathroom. Use an AV sender for remote cable.
