This idea grew out of Blake Harrison's frustration while in high school of having a hard time remembering needed facts yet being able to remember all the lyrics to his favorite rap songs. After studying at University of Pennsylvania (graduating Magna Cum Laude) and honing his own rapping skills Harrison moved to San Francisco where he met Alex Rappaport who had studied music at Tufts University (graduating Magna Cum Laude). They met working at an Italian Restuarant and one night during a basketball Blake mentioned his idea to Alex and Flocabulary was born.
Their first CD was released in April of 2005 and contains 12 songs with 500 SAT list words with the definitions. In the fall of 2005, Flocabulary began their Shakespeare is Hip-Hop school tour, performing shows in Massachusetts Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Texas, and New Hampshire.
In April of 2006 the duo came out with another CD and book. This time they tackled U.S. History and they teamed up with some of New York's hottest underground emcees/musicians such as Akir, Grey and April Hill. They have lessons plans for teachers and also offer live performances for schools and it is being used in over 1,000 schoold nation-wide. In a school in West Virginia students scored overall 50 points higher on their SAT's after using Flocabulary.
We all know that we all would rather have fun while learning and who amoung us can not remember the learning songs of our childhood. Some when trying to pass a sobriety test will 'sing' their ABC's. These kids are learning before they even realize they are learning and this, like the well-known ABC's song has a very good chance of being remembered for life.
