Flogging Molly Promote New Detroit-made Album on 7th Annual Green 17 Tour

Celtic punk band Flogging Molly spent their Fall in Detroit putting together their new album Speed of Darkness which will be out in May.

The album is the follow-up to their acclaimed 2008 release Float, which debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200, #1 on the Billboard Independent Albums Chart and #2 on the Billboard Alternative Album Chart.

The seven-piece Irish American band formed in L.A. at a local pub in 1993 but after the 2006 wedding of frontman Dave King and fiddler Bridget Regan, the couple moved back to Regan's hometown near 8 Mile and Woodward.

Since the move, the pair consider themselves native Detroiters and are proud to have crafted the new album there.

The first single off of the album is titled "Don't Shut 'Em Down", which was inspired by a trip down I-75 heading into Detroit where the pair saw the infamous "Shut 'Em Down" graffiti.

The track is built around their reaction to seeing the tagger's message and their belief that Detroit will rise again due to it's historical resilience.

The band recorded Speed of Darkness in Asheville, North Carolina with producer Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Avett Brothers).

Currently, Flogging Molly is out on their 7th Annual Green 17 tour which began on February 8 and runs through March 19.

The Green 17 tour was born in 2004 as a countdown to St Patrick's Day with a performance celebration in each city leading to the holiday.

Flogging Molly fans anxiously await the Green 17 tour each year as the festivities have grown into near-legendary status.

Flogging Molly's blend of traditional Celtic sounds, hard-edged punk and thoughtful lyrics, combined with the sheer power of their live shows have garnered a loyal following that matches the band's energy night after night.

This time out The Drowning Men and Moneybrother will be opening the show.

The tour will be making a Detroit stop on Thursday, March 3 at the Fillmore theater at 6:30 pm.

The show will feature performances by some of their new material including the songs "So Sail On," "Saints & Sinners" and "Heart of the Sea."

This year's Green 17 Tour stop at the Fillmore was amazing. The concert was awesome, they had a lot of "support Detroit" messages (including their backdrop of Michigan Central Station), and they invited their fans over to the bar across the street after the show. If you've never seen them live, I seriously recommend getting tickets next year.
