Florida Atlantic University: A Great Place to Go to School

Dana Barnett
Do you love the beach and warm weather? Does the idea of going to a school that's located in sunny South Florida sound a lot more appealing than attending a school where you'll need to scrape your windshield and shovel snow before you leave for class every morning in the winter? If the answer is yes, then Florida Atlantic University, with campuses in Boca Raton, Jupiter, Port St. Lucie, Davie, and Ft. Lauderdale, might be the ideal school for you.

As a recent graduate of Florida Atlantic University, I have nothing but good things to say about the school. Not only are the campuses located in one of the most desirable areas in the country, you'll also receive a top notch education while you're enrolled there. FAU's faculty are well respected in their fields and the university is building a reputation as a research institution in biomedicine and technology.

Founded in 1964 as the first public university in southeastern Florida, Florida Atlantic University currently has about 26,000 students enrolled, including students from 48 states and 143 countries. The majority of students at FAU are transfer students who come from community colleges and begin their studies at FAU as juniors. However, in 2006, FAU enrolled over 2,314 students as freshmen.

Over 71 percent of FAU's students attend classes at the main campus in Boca Raton which is located in a beautiful area with shopping, restaurants, beaches, and night life close by. The Boca campus offers students on campus housing, a health clinic, a Starbucks, and numerous other personal services. The Boca campus is also home to many clubs, organizations, and activities. However, FAU's satellite campuses are not lacking--these campuses offer students who cannot attend the main campus plenty of classes and activities to keep them busy and involved in the FAU community.

Florida Atlantic University also offers a diverse curriculum. Students can choose from any of 62 bachelor's degree programs, 56 master's degree programs, and 19 doctoral degree programs. In 2006, FAU awarded degrees to 5494 undergraduate and graduate students.

Although FAU is not as large as some of the other public universities in Florida, it is every bit as exciting and sophisticated,, and the faculty and staff are qualified, educated, and supportive. Plus, the school's location is one of the best in Florida and the university is public, making it an attractive option for in state students. There are just to many other advantages associated with attending FAU to name them all. Basically, Florida Atlantic University is an all around great school--great location, great people, great education!
