Florida to Follow Arizona's Anti-Immigration Law and Then Some

A Contributor Perspective: Attorney General Bill McCollum's Proposed Law

Andres Antonio Carantos
MIAMI - The hottest button issue to hit Miami and the whole state of Florida since the Elian Gonzalez saga is the anti-immigration law that is nearing in November's gubernatorial elections. Cafecitos and Cuban restaurants alike are abuzz with the prospect of Florida following Arizona's harsh immigration law. However, if Attorney General Bill McCollum gets its way, it'll make the Arizona law look more like a stern suggestion.

According to vivirlatino.com, McCollum proposes that not only will the new law require police in Florida to check the status of suspected illegal immigrants during a "lawful" stop, but also require businesses to use a database at the federal level to run the status of applicants. Additionally, he proposes that illegal immigrants who commit crimes should receive harsher penalties than legal immigrants or U.S. citizens.

If an illegal immigrant is caught in any criminal activity, under this new, harsher law, the judge is allowed to consider the illegal status when deliberating bail.

Many citizens in Miami are concerned what this new law could mean to many of their friends and family members. In the famous local Cuban restaurant Versailles, a Cuban woman by the name of Josefina says, "I understand that there is a problem with immigration. But there has to be a better way. I'm not entirely against there being harsher penalties for illegal immigrants, they give all of us hardworking Latinos a bad name. What worries me are the hard working people that are contributing to this society, this community, and are going to be punished for it. They're just trying to live a better life. Isn't that what America stands for... or not anymore? I would love to see the face of his great-grandparents when he [McCollum] decided to do back this."

Indeed, it's difficult not to find Attorney General McCollum's anti-immigration stance a bit hypocritical. You would think that someone with such an Irish last name would have a little more compassion for the struggle illegal immigrants face on a daily basis.

Although the 2010 Florida gubernatorial race is not until November 2, many Miami citizens are now starting to speak about how to organize themselves for protests, make picket signs and distribute flyers.

When asked what she would put on her picket sign, Josefina is undecided, "I'm not sure yet. But it's time to start thinking about it."

One thing is certain: they are keeping a close eye with what happens in the Arizona case, which may reach all the way to the Supreme Court.

As I left the restaurant, Josefina screamed my name and chanted, "Sotomayor all the way, baby!"

The IRS issues ID numbers so immigrants can pay taxes. Immigrants also pay their taxes by using fake socials. The government doesn't have to dole out benefits and the extra money is never recovered by illegals. I been an immigrant for 20 years and I've paid taxes. Despite having to deal with corporations, I have owned a small business for 10 years and I do employment during peak seasons. Contrary to what many Americans thinks I'm am not allowed to leave the country or else. If I do I lose my property, my business, and my only chance to become a citizen. People complain to much and they fear that immigrants are ruining their lives, but it's the other way around.

Another argument FAIR makes, which makes it hard to glean what their solution would be is the high cost of deporting undocumented workers which FAIR blames on the immigrants themselves. It's a somewhat circular argument to say that the cost of undocumented immigrants includes the cost of failing law enforcement efforts. So, in essence, FAIR is saying that the deport-them-all approach costs too much money and doesn't work. Yet their "solution" is to spend even more money on enforcement.

FAIR's data is meant only to reinforce their vision of "attrition through enforcement." It is not rooted in an effort to move the immigration debate forward. Therefore, passing comprehensive immigration reform - which would yield a cumulative $1.5 trillion in added U.S. gross domestic product over 10 years - is the only sound economic decision the United States can make.

This week, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) came out with a report entitled, The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on U.S. Taxpayers, which discusses the costs of unauthorized immigration to the United States. As usual, FAIR has put out a highly misleading fiscal snapshot of the costs allegedly imposed on U.S. taxpayers by unauthorized immigrants and completely discounts the economic contributions of unauthorized workers and consumers. Moreover, FAIR inflates their costs in a variety of ways and conveniently ignores any contributions that would offset these costs.

While the publication is long and deals with a wide range of issues that warrant more dissection by credible economic experts, the trade publication Education Week has already begun the deconstruction with an item that sheds light on their misleading claims about providing English language services in schools.
