Florida Knitters Party for Charity in St. Petersburg.... AC Knitters and New Subscriber for Subscriber Participants Welcome

Memmay Moore
We don't usually think of knitters as a late night party crowd, but this Saturday, Needles and Knobs, 7213 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, invites party goers to a a late night knit party from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Party goers are urged to wear their pajamas, gather up their needles and yarn and join a marathon knitting and crocheting event. They are also urged to bring a snack to share, their own craft project if they wish, and some canned food items to donate to a food pantry. Admission is free.

If you need to knit or need a knob, Needles and Knobs is the store for you. The front room of the St. Pete boutique is a rainbow of knitted dresses and purses, with cubbyholes to the ceiling filled with yarns from around the world, spun from fibers like silk, corn and yak and all kinds of organic material. There are books and catalogues available. Owner, Audrey Dantowich is there to help. Knitters are invited to visit and knit. Classes are given weekly and the store holds special social and charity events. Decorative knobs for cabinets are sold in the back room.

The term "knitters" caught my attention since it is a term some AC writers use in referring to those who follow or subscribe to each other's work regularly. To simplify, it means, "I will read and comment on your articles if you return the favor." Whether or not this is a good use of an AC writer's time has been debated ad nauseum on the General Forum. Some writers love the idea, some writers hate it.

If you missed the drama last year, the groups who were for mutual subscribing were termed "knitting circles." Members were referred to as "knitters." Visualize little old ladies sitting around in circles, knitting and gossiping. You get the picture.

Eventually the New Subscriber for Subscriber forum seemed the best place for the knitting circles, and a lively, helpful site evolved where newbies and others could learn and share their experiences plus develop a following. Many writers felt more comfortable on this site and didn't mind being called a "knitter," even the men. Many of the original "knitters" are Planets 8, 9 and 10 today. Though the term "knitters" is rarely used on AC any more, it has a proud history. There are new "knitters" joining all the time.

It just goes to show that "knitters" are people too. "Knitters" are cool. "Knitters" are creative. "Knitters" are smart. "Knitters" are kind and generous. They help make AC a good writing site. "Knitters" come in all colors, backgrounds, ages and abilities. They all have their own ideas on how to succeed on AC. What works for one may not work for others....but it's OK. Everyone is welcome.

Some "knitters" actually knit and crochet also. One popular rising star on the site does both. As for me, I support "knitters" everywhere, especially the party goers for charity at Needles and Knobs. Maybe I will even go down there sometime and take a few classes. I'll bring some canned food items with me.

I enjoyed this article. I don't do any actual knitting; as for AC "knitting," well, I try to keep up with my favorite writers, but I can't read as much as I'd LIKE to read. Oh well. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. :)
