Florida lawmakers eliminated state funding for public libraries Thursday evening as demand for library-related services soars, according to a news release by the Florida Library Association.

"If it's not restored, they get zero," said Faye Roberts, executive director of the FLA.

Roberts said that public libraries have relied on state support to serve Floridians since 1962.

Libraries provide communities access to information by way of books, periodicals, and other media. Miami-Dade County is expected to lose $1,642,929 in library dollars, at a time when residents need services most.

"We're hoping people will contact their legislators immediately to restore funding and keep our libraries open," said Roberts.
