She has tried:
• holding her breath,
• drinking water from the far side of the glass,
• putting sugar under her tongue,
• sipping pickle juice, and
• breathing into a paper bag
along with countless other home remedies. Nothing has helped. Even well-meaning strangers have approached Jennifer at Wal-Mart and attempted to scare the hiccups away. Still, she hiccups.
Jennifer hiccups at a rate of approximately 50 times a minute.
Over the past three weeks, she has been treated by a pediatrician, a cardiologist, and a neurologist. She has endured blood tests, a CT scan, and an MRI.
Mary Jane Park of the St. Petersburg Times interviewed Jennifer and her mother, Rachel Robidoux. During that interview, Robidoux remarked that Jennifer sounds like a barking chihuahua. She said that at first it was kind of funny, but now it's become much more than an annoyance.
"It's actually really stressful,'' Jennifer said. "Really, there's nothing much I can do except stay home."
"She just wants to be a normal teenager again," Robidoux also said during Park's interview.
Jennifer complains that her chest and hips hurt. They are sore from the spasms that occur constantly from the hiccups. She must take caution when showering so as not to inhale water. She must eat foods she can swallow quickly between hiccups such as applesauce and ice cream.
Jennifer's hiccups subside only when she sleeps. The relief of slumber comes to her only by way of medicinal help in the form of valium, a prescription antianxiety drug, and Benadryl, an over-the-counter antihistamine.
Jennifer has been unable to attend school since her hiccups began and has had little contact with friends. Parks reports that Jennifer says she's contemplated jumping off the Sunshine Skyway just to make the hiccups stop.
According to Parks, Dr. Melissa Teitelman, a gastroenterologist at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., states that Jennifer's attitude is not surprising.
A prolonged occurrence "can be pretty miserable," Teitelman said. "People become suicidal."
Charles Osborne of Iowa has the dubious distinction of being on record as having the longest case of hiccups on record. His diaphragm spasms lasted 69 years and five months. Osborne's hiccups occurred every 11/2 seconds.
"I'm just looking for some answers," Jennifer's mother expressed during Park's interview, "where somebody's gone through this. At this point, we're willing to do anything."

Post a CommentIf I may I would like to suggest a remedy, it may sound silly but believe me it really works and has never failed!... Get a glass of water and set it aside. Now turn around until you are really dizzy, I mean really, really dizzy. Stop turning and drink the water. During this time while you are drinking (and trying not to lose your balance), try not to hiccup while drinking. They go away like that, something about making yourself dizzy I think does something inside your body. TRUST ME IT SOUNDS SILLY BUT IF YOU DO IT, IT REALLY DOES WORK AND IF IT DOESN'T EMAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW. I'VE TRIED THIS EVERY TIME AND THEY ALWAYS GO AWAY. I DARE YOU TO TRY IT AND PROVE ME WRONG. -- SWEETSTRAWBERRY_21@YAHOO.COM
my girlfriend has these hiccups everyday she doesnt complain about pain in her body but i jus wanted to know is there something wrong with her or is it something not to worry about
I recently read about a man who hiccuped for 6 years. He also tried everything until his neighbor told him to try homemade damson preservers. It worked. This was a recent article on Yahoo news, you should still be able to find it.
gargle with a mouthful of cola , then swallow it !! do not spit it out!! SWALLOW IT
one more try:--gargle with a mouthful of cola , then swallow it !! do not spit it out. Hope it works ?
I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYONE (ASIDE FROM ME) RECOMMEND THIS REMEDY YET. IT IS REALLY SIMPLE AND WORKS 100% OF THE TIME FOR MYSELF AND EVERONE THAT I HAVE RECOMMENDED IT TO. TO CURE HICCUPS IMMEDIATLEY JUST EAT A FEW CRACKERS. ANY KIND WILL WORK, BUT CHEEZ-NIPS WORK REALLY WELL. THIS REMEDY IS MUCH EASIER THAN ALL OF THOSE OTHER SILLY ONES, AND IT ACTUALLY DOES WORK.
This must be so horrible for her. My husband had them for a week once and it drove him crazy. He was miserable. They disappeared on their own. Whenever I have them I run in place or around the house as fast as I can. Sometimes disrupting your breathing pattern in an extreme manner can help. God bless her, I hope she can get rid of them.
I had the hiccups for an hour once and that was enough toll on my body with the constant spasms, I can't imagine living with this for 3 weeks. I really hope this ends for her soon.
I hate having the hiccups for a few minutes...I can't imagine having them for 3 weeks (not to mention 69 years!!)
try taking something called OPC-3
its a supplement that helps with different problems such as tics
for the first two weeks it may become worse, but after continuing it after a while you will cease to hiccup
