Florida's Longest Wave

Monster Hole

Rik Rodriguez
If you have ever been to south central Florida you may have taken a drive down A1A and crossed one of the bridges where you can see the inter costal and the ocean at the same time. One of these fabulous bridges over looks Sebastian Inlet and has a great view of Monster Hole. Monster Hole is named for its large fish that have been seen swimming around. If you are looking for a Hawaiian type wave in the mainland USA, Monster Hole is one of the only warm water places I have seen that has this type of wave.

The break is one of the only surf-breaks that I have seen in Florida that breaks about a quarter mile out in the ocean. Getting out to the break you have several options, I sometimes jump into the out flowing tidal surge and let the time suck me out to sea. For those of you who think that this method doesn't sound so good I understand. You can access the break by parking in the south parking lot of Sebastian Inlet State Park. This is great access because you do not have to pay $5.00 dollars to access the Inlets best wave Monster Hole.

Parking is pretty secure because the Inlets police force is always patrolling all the parking lots around the area. But I want to remind you do not leave your valuables in plain sight where they would be tempting for someone to snatch. Remember when visiting Florida state parks you are not allowed to have alcoholic beverages.

They seem to be pretty strict about that rule. But you do not need to drink to surf. The wave is a real wacker. It jacks peels and spits like you would expect a wave in Hawaii to act. It breaks surfboards just like Hawaiian waves do. I have surfed it with a longboard and it was fun. But I prefer a shortboard. It has enough power for you to bring your gun when the wave is really hammering. Use caution because I have seen some big fish out there myself. The tides and side shore rips can be challenging at times. Its deep there so you wont be hitting the bottom like you will at many Florida surf breaks. See you at Monster Hole.
