Flower Crafts for Kids

Celebrate spring and summer with these fun flower crafts.

Coffee Filter Flowers

Materials Needed: White coffee filters, washable markers, spray bottle filled with water, and green pipe cleaners.

Work on a surface that you won't mind getting wet. Lay out the coffee filters and color each one with the washable markers. Spray the coffee filters with the water bottle until the colors from the markers begin to bleed. Careful- if you saturate the coffee filter too much, the colors will just run off. To make lightly scented flowers, you can add a drop or two of essential oil to the water. Once the coffee filters are completely dry, stack three of them together. Push your finger into the center of the coffee filters to form a cone shape. Secure the tip of the cone by wrapping the green pipe cleaner around it several times. Fluff up the edges of the coffee filters to make your flower fuller.

Egg Carton Flowers

Materials Needed: Cardboard egg carton, scissors, paint, paint brushes, and green pipecleaners.

Cut the egg carton so that the individual egg cups are separated. Paint each one. Once dry, make a cut on each corner of the egg cup to open up the flower. To add the stem, use the tip of your scissors to poke two small holes in the center of the egg cup. Thread the end of the pipe cleaner through the holes and twist to secure.

Tissue Paper Flowers

Materials Needed: Tissue paper cut into small squares, pencil, glue, printed flower template, and wax paper.

The first type of tissue paper flower is perfect for toddlers. Print out a flower template from your favorite coloring page website. Glue the tissue paper squares on the back of the template, completely covering the flower shape. Once dry, cut out the flower.

You can make a flower sun catcher by laying the tissue paper squares between two pieces of wax paper. The wax paper will mute the color, so be sure to pick bright colors for this craft. Cover the wax paper with a towel and then go over it with a hot iron several times. Once cool, cut a flower shape out of the wax paper. Set it on the windowsill, or punch a hole and hang it in the window with a ribbon for a colorful sun catcher.

You can also make a textured flower with tissue paper. Print out another copy of your flower template and cover it with small dots of glue close together. Taking one square of tissue paper, push the flat eraser end of the pencil into the center and twist the tissue paper square tightly around the pencil. Set it onto one of the glue dots firmly, then slowly remove the pencil. The tissue paper should still be upright. Repeat with the other tissue paper squares until your flower is filled in. Make sure to let this project dry thoroughly before hanging it up.

Use these handmade flowers to brighten up your home, or, better yet, give them to a friend to brighten theirs!
