Flower Garden Paradise - a Spring Poem

Flower Garden Paradise

Rachael A. Lund
Our flower garden plans were drawn up
when the temperatures were still cold enough
to numb your fingers and toes
much too cold to plant anything
but not too soon to envision
what the coming warmth of spring
would soon promise to give.
My daughter and I could picture
each miniature rose bush
longing to burst forth in a multitude
of vibrant red or soft pink blooms
the black-eyed Susans encircling the tree
would be joined this year by white shasta daisies
and majestic purple coneflowers
the evening primrose would say hello
in a sea of yellow petals kissed by the sun
and the gentle spring breezes
would disperse the rich fragrance
from delicate blooms of phlox
displayed in purples, pinks, and white
to draw the whisper of butterfly wings
and the iridescence of hummingbirds
to our flower garden paradise.
