When decided to take up flower gardening you need to decide whether you would prefer annual flowers that live for one season and must be replanted every year, or perennials that survive the winter and return again in the summer. You must also ascertain what kind of flowers will thrive in your climate as well as what their sun requirements are. You also need to decide what type of look you are going for. There is an option of a wild-plant style which will require mixing plants of different heights, colors and varieties. This gives a very natural and charming look. For a more manicured look you could go for a stepping stone style, which involves planting short flowers in the front of your garden and working up to the tallest flowers at the back.
You can start your flower garden by either buying seeds or actual flowers that you can then transplant. Planting is one of the easiest parts of flower gardening. It requires you either to just sprinkle the seeds around a flower bed or transplant flowers by digging a hole slightly bigger than the flower and setting the flower in the hole. All you need to do then is cover the flower with the loose soil, press down firmly and water. If you are buying actual flowers it is also a good idea to lay the flowers out in bed first to make sure that you like the arrangement and that there is sufficient space.
Even easier than planting a flower garden is maintaining one. It's recommended that you apply a bag of fertilizer in the early spring, pinch back any blooms after they start to fade and keep them well watered. You can also save yourself work during the next season of flower gardening if you free your garden of all debris and spread out organic nutrients like peat moss or compost. You should also be sure to turn over the soil to properly mix the fertilizer. Do take care though not to disturb the roots of any perennials you may have.
Flower gardening is an easy 3 step process. Simply decide what to plant, plant it, and then water consistently. Not only will your garden look vibrant and colorful but it will also give you a good reason to spend some time in the beautiful outdoors.
