Flower Lesson Plan for Preschool and Homeschool

Michelle S
Flowers blooming in every shape and color make Spring beautiful and exciting for preschool aged children. This flower lesson plan is appropriate for larger classes, small groups, and homeschool settings.

Blossoming Tree Craft

Glue a twig onto a piece of paper. Give your students squares of tissue paper to crumple up and glue to the branch for blossoms. Talk about what kinds of trees bloom in your area, and how those blossoms will become fruit or nuts in the Summer and Fall months.

Color Changing Carnations

Put white carnations in vase filled with water that have been dyed different colors. Ask you class what they think will happen to the flowers. Over the next few days, observe what happens to one of the carnations and write down the class' observations for each day on a large piece of paper. You can also give students a "journal" with pictures of flowers in vases that they can color each day to show the changes. After a few days, ask the class why they think the Carnation changed colors.

Flower Petal Counting

Draw circles to be the centers of the flowers and write the numbers 5-10 in the middles of the circles. Help each student make 5-10 fingerprints for petals around the circles, depending on the number inside. Let them draw stems and leaves.

Play Flower Garden

During the flower unit, put plastic gardening tools, gardening gloves, watering cans, and a variety of silk flowers outside in the sandbox. Let the students imagine they are planting and picking flowers.

Flower Matching Games

Cut out matching pictures from flower seed packets or online and glue to index cards. Let students pair up the matching flowers or play memory with the cards.

See Our Sunflower Grow

Plant a giant sunflower seed outside in a sunny location. Have the children in the class take turns watering and feeding the sunflower. Once the seed sprouts, measure it weekly and record the growth on a measuring tape. Let students predict how high the sunflower will grow and see which student comes the closest. When the sunflower is finished growing, harvest the seeds for a class snack.

Flower Identification

Have wildflower identification guides and gardening books in the reading center for the children to look at. Ask them about the similarities and differences between the flowers.
