If you are a nature lover or flower enthusiast you will want to check out the Carlsbad Flowering Fields while they are in season from early March to May. The Carlsbad Flowering Fields is a great place to take your elderly parents to catch up on some quality time together by taking a leisurely stroll through the walking path and while getting an up close look at all the varieties of ranunculus. For those with mobility concerns or those looking for a more guided tour experience, there is also a wagon tour that you can hitch a ride with and takes you around the fields. Families with young children can enjoy a picnic and some down time in the small children's playground. There is a vegetable garden where kids can learn about gardening.
History
The Carlsbad Flowering Fields have a long history that started over 85 years ago when Luther Gage first started growing ranunculus seeds near Frank Frazee's vegetable farm. Since Frank Frazee's introduction to the ranunculus, the Frazee family cultivated the ranunculus seedlings in much the same way as they cultivated the family run business, by planting what works best. In 1993, Frank's son Edwin Frazee retired from the family business, while Paul Ecke jr. and Mellano and Company started what is now the The Flower Fields® at Carlsbad Ranch.
Special Events
Check out The Flower Fields Website for a listing of up coming events. This year's Calendar of Events include a Kid's Day, Bluegrass Day, Arts & Crafts Fair, Canon Photography Workshop, Red Hat Ladies' Day/Style Show, Bonsai Show & Sale, and Mother's Day Celebration.
Tips
You will definitely want to bring your camera and take some close up pictures sitting next to the flowers. This is a great location for an annual family Christmas picture. Keane Studios offers professional photography services. If you are on a budget, you can scope out a nice area yourself and enlist the help of someone and direct them on how you want the picture framed, if you don't have a tripod or timer on your camera. As with any outdoor event, it's recommended you bring comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing, and water to make the most out of this experience. There is food available on site and it's located near several nearby restaurants.
