Flu Shots Available in Fulton County, Georgia

A Shot for Good Health

Annette Robbins
Residents of Fulton County, Georgia can receive their flu shot for a cost of $25.00 by simply driving to several neighborhood health centers throughout Fulton County, Georgia. No excuses that you do not have time to visit your doctor for the flu shot. Each year we read the alarming statistics about the current flu season and all of its dire predictions about the elderly and very young being most susceptible. Flu season generally lasts from November to April. A few years ago, some were unable to receive the flu shot because reportedly there was not enough supply. This year health departments have been assured by the government that a plentiful supply of vaccine is available so no shortage of the vaccine is a concern this season.

Neighborhood Health Centers are offering the flu shots and health practitioners strongly encourage residents to get the flu shot at a convenient location. Not do get the flu shot, states Fulton County Medical Director, Dr Steven Katkowsky, is to run the risk of exposing yourself or others to the complications and possible debilitating symptoms of the flu. The very young, those over 50 years of age and individuals whose immune system is compromised, are most at risk to contract the flu and the potential threat of illness and even death. Those who dismiss or discount the notion of getting the flu shot because they feel the flu shot gives them the flu are misinformed. On the contrary, no one gets the flu from taking the flu shot. The flu vaccine is a dead virus and if you contract the flu you had already contracted the flu before receiving the shot . Fulton County is making the flu shots available for all residents and walk ins are accepted. Some drugstores and supermarkets offered flu shots last year and may do so this year. Check with the local supermarket manager to determine if you can obtain the flu shot at your local supermarket chain. Last year, Kroger's supermarket offered flu shots for $25.00 and there was not a long waiting line and the paperwork was minimal. Medicare Part A and B are often accepted or required at the facilities offering the flu shot. If you are not a Medicare beneficiary you will pay an out of pocket cost of $25.00 which seems to be the prevailing charge.

Some communities in Fulton County are offering flu shots at drive in clinics. For those individuals who feel they cannot spare the time to go into a site to obtain a flu shot, a drive in clinic gives you the opportunity to obtain your flu shot with minimal disruption to your schedule. One can complete the paperwork in the car and obtain the flu shot without leaving the driver's seat. Such accommodations take away any excuses for not getting the flu shot. With the flu season fast approaching, it is a benefit to take the necessary precautions to avoid the uncomfortable and debilitating consequences of contracting the flu. Several national chain pharmacies including Rite Aid and CVS are offering flu shots. Check your nearest location for dates, cost and schedules. Some of the pharmacies require an appointment. If we all do our part, the flu season can be less of a worry. Take a shot for good health!
