If you want to collect diamonds, you have to know and study their properties first. Doing so will help you how to choose the best ones.

Cut, color, clarity, carat weight-these are what everyone knows as the 4Cs of diamonds. But do you know that they also possess a quality called fluorescence? It is also known as photo-luminescence, which is due to the small amounts of Boron in the diamond. It is activated by ultraviolet light or UV light. It is a part of the evaluation and assessment of a diamond.

Fluorescence is graded by how much blue can be found in a diamond. It can be graded as None, Faint, Medium, Medium blue, Strong, Strong Blue, and Intense Blue. Ever since it was known to man, the demand for blue-white diamonds had increased. The blue parts are the fluorescence of a diamond, and the white ones are only a reference to the color of the stone. But the demand soon decreased, as consumers preferred the colorless stones over time. Until now, people seem to prefer the colorless ones.

If you are interested in these blue-white diamonds and if you think that its popularity may be rising again, make sure you examine the diamond before purchasing it. This will help you make sure that you are really buying a real diamond, and not a fake one. Have it professionally examined in a variety of conditions such as sunlight, fluorescent, and a black light, you will know that a diamond has a fluorescent quality if it becomes hazy in daylight. You will find that it will also glow on the dance floor.

The colorless diamonds, on the other hand, have become very rare and expensive. They can be graded from D (flawless) to G. If you buy a colorless diamond with a grade of H or higher, there may be some fluorescence in it. Fluorescence will naturally increase the attractiveness of your stone, not to mention its value. Remember that a blue fluorescence will offset a yellowish tone.

There are also some diamonds that have a yellow or orange fluorescence. These are not very popular, and any reputable jeweler will recommend against it. Unless you want a diamond in this color, a similar fluorescence will surely enhance its color.

If you keep in mind this information when purchasing a diamond, you can never go wrong. Hire a good jeweler to help you every time you want to buy one. They have more knowledge on diamonds, so it will be better to put our trust in them.
