Flurry of Activity as Chiefs' Practice Opens: Fan Take

If the first day of training camp was a media circus for the Kansas City Chiefs, the second day still featured some main events under the Big Top. Instead of focusing on who did what in practice , the Chiefs did what most other NFL teams did which was sign a flurry of players so they could get on the field.

Free Agent Signings

Perhaps the biggest news of the day was signing free agent center Casey Wiegmann. He big man will return for the 2011-2012 season despite being unsure he would retire after last year. The Pro Bowl lineman has been a staple on the Chiefs' line for much of the 2000s and can be credited with opening some huge holes for dominant Kansas City running backs. Jamaal Charles will need his services this year for the ground game to be successful.

Another decent grab is Steve Breaston at wide receiver. He played in Arizona for four years and brings experience as a receiver and kick returner. He has a 102-yard return to his credit. It helps that head coach Todd Haley knew him during his assistant coaching days with the Arizona Cardinals.

Top Draft Pick Signed

Unlike rookie holdouts for more money that usually happen each year, once the lockout ended there was a flurry of activity to get draft picks under contract. The Chiefs signed their number one pick of the 2011 draft. Jonathan Baldwin became an official member of the Kansas City Chiefs July 29, 2011, and will be a vital member of the receiving corps. Baldwin will be a big target for quarterback Matt Cassel this year.

Tony Moeaki Unable to Practice

Second-year tight end Tony Moeaki was initially placed on the Physically-Unable-To-Perform (PUP) list due to an unspecified ailment. Moeaki was a key component of last year's team and will look to improve upon the 2010 campaign that saw an AFC West title and a playoff game in Arrowhead Stadium. Haley told the Chiefs' website the ailment wasn't serious and that Moeaki missed the first official practice.

Kansas City looks to have all of the wheels moving forward towards another playoff run in 2011. There haven't been any surprises and training camp so far has been low-key and business like. As long as it translates into wins, that's all that matters.

William Browning is a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs after latching on to the team during the lean years of St. Louis football. Born in the gateway city, he is also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He currently resides in Branson, Mo.
