Fly, Little Bird!

Coral Levang
The time came for her to test her wings.

She flew away, far from the nest
In the tree, which kept her safe from harm,
And offered soundness in a world,
Which exhaled paranoia and lies.

Each passing year, she flew 'round and 'round,
Searching for protection from the storms
In the fallen, dead branches left to rot
On the ground; no longer able to see the sky.

She built her nest, and mothered her young nestlings
With beautiful, downy feathers and the vision
To soar high to the heavens, yet living
So close to the ground, they could not see the sky.

As they grew older, they hopped easily
Off the branches of the decaying limbs, foraging
For scraps on the ground, like gluttonous scavengers
Squawking warnings at the others who got in their way.

She tired with each passing year as she sought
After comfort, protection, and sustenance for her brood.
Her weariness grew, and nary a peep passed
Through her beak, as her offspring relentlessly pecked at her.

Tired, sad, and spirit nearly-broken
One day she remembered her nest up
In the tree, which kept her safe from harm,
And offered her a perch, where she had a view of the sky.

And the time came for her to, once again, test her wings.

Deeply affecting. In fact, I relate so strongly, the weight on my chest makes it hard to breathe as I read this, Coral. I'm so sad for the little bird, for her misguided offspring who never learned to fly. I find myself hoping they followed her when she took to the sky again...

Hmmm...isn't that like people during the storms of life. We fly, we soar, we get beaten down, we fall to the ground. And then, at some point, we get back up again.

That brought tears to my eyes. I was glad she remembered, in the end, that she once knew how to fly.
