Flying Allegiant Air

Greg Seltz
Founded in 1997 under the name WestJet Express, the company quickly adopted the aforementioned title after a trademark dispute. Initially, the corporation experienced major financial concerns which were not resolved until roughly 2007-2008. However, the recent economic crisis provided an opportunity for Allegiant Air to succeed other competitors. In 2008, only Southwest Airlines and Allegiant Air profited in the first quarter due to a reduction in oil, and an increase in value. To spare the historical small talk, and engage in a more opinionated review, read below:

The Catch

Without a doubt, Allegiant Air is cheap! However, additional taxes, fees, etc. will typically double, even triple the ticket rates! For example, a recent purchase estimated $19.99 two weeks in advance from LAS to XNA (Las Vegas to NW Arkansas). 2 adults travelling round trip on the respective fee will accrue $79.96. Naturally, each customer is allowed 1 carry-on, and 1 personal item (i.e. purse, laptop, etc.). As I navigate through the required step process, the opening deal appears undoubtedly satisfying. Unfortunately, Step 4 includes associated fees such as booking, convenience, resort......Hesitation searches for a conclusion as my mental mathematics attempt to add all the numbers. Total duties & taxes included reach an additional $70.80. Of course, only at Allegiant Air am I recommended purchasing a seat selection for $13.99, and priority boarding for another $6.99. To finalize the transaction, I must debate whether checked luggage is worth $40 per item. For those without a calculator, assuming I was baited by the options, a total of $272.72 will fly me to my destination.

Tips

Obviously, this is not my first trip via Allegiant Air. I subtracted the additional fees associated with priority boarding and seat selection, and purchased 1 checked luggage item, creating a revised total of $190.76. For 2 adults destined to travel 1338 miles, or roughly a 20 hour drive, the concluding deal is a bargain! Do yourself a favor, travel lightly and be flexible. It will inevitably provide for a less expensive trip. For those unfamiliar with the airline, it is headquartered in Las Vegas, NV and travels to various small towns across the United States. The company goal is to reach customers in winterized locations, and accrue their business to warmer climates. Go ahead; see if your town is reached by Allegiant Air. I have included the link below.

I agree. We flew Allegiant in Jan. 08 to Orlando, and found lots of extra add-on fees as you detailed. We avoided the online booking fee (HUH???) by driving to the airport to buy our tix in person (no one was staffing the Allegiant counter so we waited for someone 30 minutes), and avoided the seat choice fee by showing up early the day of the flight (as the counter person recommended). A pain, but worth it to save some $.

My son just flew to Vegas on Allegiant Air today. I'm not sure what his ticket cost, but he doesn't check luggage and Loveland has a small airport which beats driving to Denver's airport.
