Flying Lessons

For Audrey and Maria Roth

Laurie Meekis
We give you wings with which to fly, ground to land on,

and flying lessons to show you how to navigate the journey of life.

But the courage to spread your wings and take off in flight,

to create your own flight path and reach your own heights, comes from you.

No storm will knock you down for long on your journey through the sky,

for the boundless joy that rises within you, the spirit of wings and halos,

gives flight and fight to hope, another day, another chance.

In stillness I watch you sleep and hold my breath,

then breathe each day you wake again, a miracle, my child.

If only we all knew how to fly through a storm like you do.

and come out whole each time on the other side.
