One of the first things you need to do is to confirm that your pet will be allowed to fly with you. Specific pets are allowed to accompany you on the plane, but not all airlines allow that. If you plan on bringing your pet along for the ride, you need to make sure and inform the airline that you will be bringing him. This is very important because if it turns out that they do not allow pets, you will likely miss your flight because you are unable to board.
Next, assuming that you are allowed to travel with your pet, you will need to determine the best way to keep your pet contained. If you are bringing along your cat or dog, for example, you will probably need to bring a carrier. When deciding upon which type of carrier is best for your travel needs, you should keep in mind that not every type of carrier is allowed on the plane. Assuming you want to bring your pet on board with you, and not have him stowed with the planes cargo, you should choose a carrier that will not affect other passengers in a negative way. The carrier will not be allowed to block the aisle or infringe upon your fellow passengers seats. Beyond these basic rules, you should check with the airlines to read there more specific rules.
You will likely have to show proper documentation before being allowed to board the plane with your pet. Most of these documents will need to pertain to your pets health. Some airlines want your pet to pass a medical evaluation, to verify that he will be no harm to other passengers, before he is allowed on the plane. Be sure to have your pet protected with the proper vaccinations before attempting to board the plane. This will not only benefit and protect your animal, but also the other passengers on the plane.
Once you have permission to fly on the plane with your animal, have purchased the correct carrier and other pet equipment, and passed all the health checks required of your pet, the only thing left to do is wait until the day of your flight. It is suggested that you arrive slightly earlier then you would if you were traveling by yourself. This is so that if you encounter any problems you will not have to miss your flight while trying to straighten it out. These problems could arise at the airport security. You and your pet will both be required to pass through the metal detector. Also, your pet carrier will be subject to search just like any other luggage, which may include being passed through the x-ray machine. Do not worry though, as your pet will not have to be passed through the x-ray machine.
As you can see, there are many things to do before traveling with your pet. Be sure to check with the airline before making any plans. Assuming the airline allows pets, purchase the correct type of pet carrier. Then, make sure you get your pets health checked out. Once you do all of that, your pet traveling experience should be simple.
