FMLA and Work Hours that Are Flexible

Teresa (Tracey) Stanisha
FMLA or the Family Medical Leave Act is a necessary part of business in today's world. This is a part of legislation that protects a person's job while they care for elderly parents or loved ones that have medical problems or otherwise need their care and attention. It works similar to that of maternity leave. It allows a worker to take paid or unpaid time off to care for their loved ones without the threat of losing their job.

With the FMLA and flexible work hours laws in place, a company can also allow an employee to work flexible hours in order to take care of the medical needs of their loved one. Perhaps the employee only needs a few hours in the morning or afternoon to take the loved one to doctor appointments or other such errands and then a visiting nurse may come to the home. This allows the employee to still come to work or use another such arrangement and still get their responsibilities met at home, too.

Companies that are flexible will find that their employees will still be able to perform their duties, but with a different work schedule. The FMLA and flexible work hours is a great solution for companies and their employees. This works well for everyone concerned because the employee still stays in the loop and will be there almost every day, but working fewer hours. The employer still gets high productivity out of the employee while meeting their needs. This eliminates any abuse of the FMLA on either side of the spectrum and more can be done with this type of situation versus the employee being absent from work for extended periods of time.

Working together on the FMLA standards and the employee's needs is a positive way to solve problems in the workplace. Make sure that you have good leaders in your company that know the rules. As the generations age, the FMLA will be in full affect for many companies and their employees. It will be used more and more as the years go by and being flexible on both sides will show definite positive outcomes in the business world.

Using the FMLA and abusing its terms is not permitted, so workers need to know that. If there is a legitimate reason for needing to use this type of legislation then they need to follow the proper processes. Not doing so can result in a termination of their employment, so employees need to be aware that it is only to be used in rare occurrences when someone in their personal life needs care.

For both companies and employees, the FMLA was created to offer alternatives to losing an employee or an employee losing their job. When used properly, this legislation works well for both parties. Being honest is a key objective when talking about FMLA and the needs of the employee. If something beneficial can be reached between the two parties it is highly recommended to make the proper allowances to keep the work moving and the targeted success on track.
