Contact lenses in the past were approved for a maximum of seven days of continuous wear, and eye care professionals have warned against sleeping with standard contact lenses in your eyes. Focus Night & Day contact lenses are made from a different material than standard lenses. This material, lotrafilcon A, allows six times more oxygen to reach the cornea, making it safe to wear the lenses for an extended period of time - up to 30 days.
Contact lens technology gets better and better every year. Focus Night & Day contact lenses have the highest oxygen permeability of any current silicone polymer lens. In the past extended wear was somewhat risky but with the new silicone polymers it is extremely safe. If you choose to go for thirty continuous days your optometrist or ophthalmologist should check your eyes regularly.
It's very important with these types of lenses to use good hygiene and watch for any signs of irritation that might signal a problem. Continuous wear lenses were allowed for most of the 1980s, but were pulled from the market when problems such as infection and ulcers on the clear front portion of the eye began to develop. Focus is one of only two manufacturers with FDA approval to market continuous wear lenses in the United States.
Focus Night and Day lenses may be prescribed for either daily wear or for extended wear up to 30 nights. FDA based approval of the longer wear schedule on a scientific study of safety and effectiveness carried out by CIBA Vision at 59 medical centers in the United States and on the advice of the Ophthalmic Devices Panel of FDA's Medical Devices Advisory Committee.
All extended-wear contact lenses hold a greater risk of severe eye infections than lenses that are removed before retiring for the day. The lenses should be replaced every month, as recommended by eye-care providers, and should never be worn longer than the suggested time. They should be cleaned and sanitized if removed in between replacement times, or disposed of.
For those who lead an active lifestyle, Focus contacts can provide:
- Almost natural vision, with no side effects if fitted and worn properly
- First-rate peripheral vision for sports, driving and safety
Focus contacts also offer ease, convenience and comfort for those who prefer the way they look without glasses, or find glasses to be cumbersome.
