Focus Factor is a type of vitamin and mineral formula that claims to give a boost to concentration. Advertising fodder for this product includes increased mental clarity and increased ability to focus. However, studies haven't proven anything in the mix is a supplement for mental awareness or concentration. For those curious as to what is actually in Focus Factor and what some of the chemicals do, this gives a brief overview.
Vitamins and Minerals
There are 23 vitamins and minerals in Focus Factor's ingredients. These include vitamin A, C, D, and E. Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, biotin, calcium and pantothenic acid are also added. Other vitamins and minerals are vitamin B6, B12, iron, iodine, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, chromium, potassium and molybdenum.
This is a standard listing of vitamins and minerals found in most multi-vitamins. While this is a great mix to help nourish the body and ensure that one is getting all nutrients needed daily, there are no studies to show it improves mental function. Vitamin C and E have been shown, however, to help reduce memory loss.
Proprietary Formulation
L-glutamine, bacopa monnieri leaf extract, diemethylaminoethanol (DMAE), choline, inositol, n-acetyltyrosine, l-pyroglutamic acid, phosphatidylserine and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrate are part of the proprietary mix. More ingredients in this formulation include bilberry fruit standardized extract, vanadium, boron, huperzine a, vinpocetine, Trace-Lyte electrolyte concentration, grape seed extract, grape skin extract, and gamma-aminobutyric acid.
DMAE has the ability to increase choline production in the body. Along with the added choline in this mix the DMAE gives plentiful abundance of this fat that is used for brain and nervous system functions. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid and is found in fish. Huperzine, according to ClinicalTrials.gov, is currently being studied as an Alzheimer's aid but no studies have been concluded on whether it is effective or not.
Other Ingredients
Other additives in Focus Factor include diacalcium phosphate, croscarmellose sodium, stearic acid, silica, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate and a pharmaceutical glaze.
These are fillers. Magnesium stearate is used to help keep oils and liquids from separating and microcrystalline cellulose is a binding agent that doubles as an anti-caking agent. These keep the formula from breaking down. The pharmaceutical glaze is put on to aid in swallowing the pill easier.
The best way to stay sharp is to get plenty of rest, do plenty of brain boosting memory puzzles, and adhere to good healthy eating.
